The private island owned by Royal Caribbean Cruise Line has earned another recognition with this attraction for older children and teens, adventure seekers and families.
Complementing existing attractions for young children and adults, the 500,000-square foot Thrill Waterpark takes its helm at the center of the ever-expanding destination, where ships dock for a day-long visit.
Thirteen water slides are split between two towers. The Family Tower features multi-person raft rides and a four-lane mat racer. It connects to a plunge pool, while a conveyor belt carries used innertubes back to the top. The Adventurer’s Tower includes the 135-foot-tall Daredevil’s Peak — said to be the tallest water slide in North America — along with six other slides.
The Caribbean’s largest wave pool features a zero-depth entry and interactive spray features. Adventure Pool provides a destination for younger explorers, who can climb an over-water rock wall and challenge themselves to an obstacle course.
Daredevil’s Peak was meant to be seen from miles offshore, so cladding around the slide boasts vibrant colors. Working within the Royal Caribbean palette, designers gave each slide its own hue to distinguish it from its neighbors. Caribbean theming on the wave pool includes starfish, seashells and water-droplet shapes.
Building on a private island presented its challenges. For instance, the island has no lodging, so construction crews and materials had to be shipped in daily.
