The California State Legislature has passed a bill meant to promote swimming and water-safety education for children. It awaits the signature of Governor Gavin Newsom.

If signed, Assembly Bill 1005 would establish a swim lesson voucher program meant to supply instruction to children under 18 years old whose families earn an income 250% or less of the federal poverty level. It would also create a committee to develop the program and determine how it will be implemented and what swim schools participate.

The legislation is supported by the International Swimming Hall of Fame and its Every Child a Swimmer program.

So far, six states have passed similar laws: Florida, Georgia, Arkansas, Washington, Arizona and New Mexico.
