Aqua Sferra Waterpark Earns Dream Designs Award

A retractable aluminum roof lets visitors enjoy the weather — or protects them from it — and offers an opportunity for energy savings. Aqua Sferra Waterpark | Donetsk, Ukraine

The designers chose an aluminum frame, not only for its striking lattice look, but also for its maintenance-free properties and resistance to the moist chemical atmosphere created by the aquatic environment. When the roof opens, hot air and humidity are exhausted naturally. The closed roof creates warming solar gain, reducing the amount of heating required during winter use. The glazed nature of the dome also eliminates the need for additional lighting during the day. It all adds up to significant energy savings.
