Team Temecula Takes the Top Spot in June’s 2018 Summer Lifeguard Challenge

The SoCal crew comes strong out of the gate with a near flawless performance.

June’s entries faced some specific challenges when it came multiple rescuers and victims, and synchronizing the lifeguard team to perform the rescue flawlessly. But the City of Temecula demonstrated a near perfect 4-person rescue drill, taking the top spot.

Each rescuer had the possibility of earning 4 points for a total team score of 16. Team Temecula lead the pack with an impressive 15 points.

Here are the criteria on which all entries were judged:

· Whether they performed the correct entry for the depth and if the entry was clean and appropriate

· If they had control of victim’s head throughout the rescue drill

· If the whole rescue team was quick in their rescue, but more importantly their ability to be synchronized with each other and have a clean group response.

Several factors impaired our rescuers:

· Victims that weren’t truly passive. These victims were stiff and rigid, which gave the appearance that there was no need to mobilize their head during the rescue, which was apparent with many rescuers only holding onto the victim’s shoulders during the drill.

· Safe entry by the rescuer. Depending on the depth rescuers could have done either a compact jump or a stride jump. However, some rescue teams should have reviewed which entry was appropriate for the depth they were entering.

· Being synchronized. Some rescuers were late in getting to the victim. Some rescuers performed the rescue correctly, however they were facing the wrong direction after the rescue was completed.

The Top Three:

There was fierce competition between the 2017 defending champions, Town of Davie, Fla: Dream Team and the 2016 champions, City of Chandler, Ariz. However, the rivalry between the two titans was disrupted by the City of Temecula, taking the win for June. Temecula has participated for several years now, stepped up their game and outperformed Davie, with Chandler close behind. Here are the results:

First place: Temecula (15/16 points)
Second place: Town of Davie, Dream Team (14/16 points)
Third place: A three-way tie between the City of Chandler, Nozomi; City of Chandler, Desert Oasis; and the Town of Davie, Cam & the Goats, which all earned 13 points.
